What Is The Difference Between A Worm, A Trojan & A Virus?

Some people call any type of malicious software a “computer virus,” but that isn’t accurate. Viruses, worms, and trojans are different types of malicious software with different behaviors. In particular, they spread themselves in very different ways.
Malicious software in general is referred to as “malware.” If you want a catch-all term for bad computer software, malware is the word to use. The good news is that your antivirus program doesn’t care what the malicious software is called — antivirus programs also remove worms, trojans, and other types of malware.

Viruses Infect Other Files

A computer virus infects other files, similar to how a biological virus infects living cells. When you execute a virus by running an already-infected file, the virus infects other files on your system. In most cases, it adds itself to existing .exe files on your system, so it will run when they do.
Some types of viruses can also infect other types of files, such as macros in Word or Excel documents. The virus spreads when an infected file is transmitted to another system. This may happen via an email attachment, removable storage device or a network file share.

Viruses also wreak havoc on your system. In some cases, they may replace existing program files with themselves entirely instead of just adding themselves to the existing programs. They may delete files and announce their presence. Viruses can also take up system memory and cause crashes.
Viruses are dangerous because of how they spread. When a legitimate file moves between systems, the virus comes with it.

Worms Copy Themselves

A worm is a standalone program that doesn’t require user intervention to spread. Worms don’t infect existing files – they spread copies of themselves instead.
Some worms, like the infamous Mydoom worm, email copies of themselves to every address in a computer’s address book. Some of the most dangerous and fast spreading worms, such as the Blaster and Sasser worms, exploit vulnerabilities in network services. Instead of emailing files, they travel over the network and infect unpatched systems that aren’t running firewalls.

Worms that spread over the network can generate a large amount of traffic, slowing down the network. Once a worm is on your system, it can perform the same malicious actions that a virus can.

Trojans Lie In Wait

Trojans are named after the mythological trojan horse. To conquer the city of Troy, the Greeks constructed a wooden horse and presented it to the Trojans as a gift. The Trojans accepted the gift into their city. Later that night, Greek soldiers emerged from the inside of the hollow wooden horse, opened the city gate – and you can imagine what followed.
A trojan horse is the same sort of thing. Trojan horses masquerade as useful software, such as a legitimate program or an illicit crack for a legitimate program. Instead of being well-behaved software, a trojan opens a backdoor on your system.

The trojan’s author can use the backdoor to make your system part of a botnet, use your Internet connection to perform illicit activities that will be traced back to you, download other malware programs onto your system, or do anything else they want.
Trojans don’t try to spread themselves in any way. Trojans must be manually executed by a user.

Other Threats

These aren’t the only types of malware. Here are a few other common ones:
  • Spyware – Spyware spies on you. Spyware encompasses everything from “key loggers” that log your keystrokes to steal your credit card information and online banking passwords, to advertising programs that monitor your web browsing activity and send it over the Internet. Spyware is generally designed to make money for its creators. Some antivirus programs don’t detect and remove this sort of software, but Windows Defender, built into Windows 7, does.

  • Scareware – Scareware, also known as crimeware, often appears as a fake antivirus alert on a web page. If you believe the  alert and download the fake antivirus program, it will inform you that you have viruses on your system. The antivirus program asks for a credit card number, insisting on a payment before “fixing” your system. Scareware holds your system hostage until you pay or remove it.
Keep your operating system and other software up-to-date and run an antivirus program to protect yourself from these dangers.

It’s been nearly four whole years since one of our original articles introducing Meebo, eBuddy, and imo.im. Since then, all three services have advanced greatly and continue to serve millions of users today.
Using these three web-based clients, you’re able to connect to almost any instant messaging protocol and chat with your buddies. As we jump into the world of mobiles, web-based clients are slowly becoming obsolete while everyone hoards apps onto their tablets and smartphones. That doesn’t mean that we’ve all stopped bumming usage of our buddies’ laptops though! Rather than installing the client, these web-based solutions really help.
Let’s start by reintroducing the old
Meebo has branched out into a more complete site, separating their famous messenger from the rest of their developments. It has remain mostly untouched, aside from adding access to several new services.
You can use Meebo Messenger to chat on AIM, Yahoo!, Windows Live, ICQ, Jabber, Google Talk, MySpace, MyYearbook, and Facebook. You can also create a community-specific Meebo username and password that will store all of your IM account credentials, for easy access.
eBuddy is generally the same as Meebo, minus the MyYearbook support. Here’s a screenshot of the Yahoo! interface:
eBuddy and Meebo are practically the gold standard when it comes to web-based clients. They function in such a similar way that one practically renders the other a bit useless (unless your school or workplace happens to block one of them).
Of the three we’ve already covered, imo.im has made the largest steps in advancement.
imo.im now supports Windows Live, Skype, Yahoo!, Google Talk, Facebook, AIM and ICQ, Jabber, VKontakte, MySpace, Hyves, and Steam. It’s a very complete solution that doesn’t get quite as much attention. Skype support is a big plus.

Now for some new stuff!
AirAIM is the most streamlined and lightweight client for web-based IM-ing. As the name entails, it’s only available for AOL Instant Messenger.

A big advantage of AirAIM is that it is relatively unknown. This means that it is probably not filtered out in most workplaces and campuses. Lucky you. AirAIM supports almost everything that the normal 5.9 client would allow you to do, just with no GUI.
To check for new messages, you’ll have to refresh your page. This also works wonders when you’re in James Bond mode, as it won’t pop up or the window won’t flash over your other work. Starting an IM conversation with a buddy is as simple as clicking on their username, typing, and submitting the form. There is also support for setting up your away message. The only core functionality that is not included with AirAIM would be modifying your buddy list.
AirAIM isn’t for everyone, but if you’re concern is having an effective web-based client for AIM with a very little footprint, this is great.
Instan-t’s web-based platform will allow you to access Windows Live, Google Talk, AIM/ICQ, and Yahoo! accounts. Like Meebo and others, you can create a “community” account that will store your credentials for easy login access at a later time.
While the buddylist interface isn’t as smooth as other clients, it works as expected.
ILoveIM.com supports Windows Live, Yahoo!, ICQ, AIM, Google Talk, and MySpace. Another nice little touch to this service is the ability to sign on invisibly (which I’ve got to have). Passwords are also encrypted with a 1024-bit RSA key.
If I had to pick any beef with this one, it’s the fact that buddy lists are capped off with ads. It’s a little annoying and obtrusive, but it doesn’t ruin the entire experience. ILoveIM.com also offers the option to edit your buddy lists, which a lot of web-based clients overlook and leave out. However, you can only log in to one account at a time.

TED

TED, the well-known organization devoted to “ideas worth spreading”, has launched a new educational initiative – TED-Ed, “lessons worth sharing”. Like TED, TED-Ed is devoted to spreading knowledge, this time to students in the form of animated lessons.
As the first part of the TED-Ed initiative, a new YouTube channel has been launched, which currently includes 12 videos about topics like nature, language and history. More videos will be added weekly, and the goal is to rapidly reach several hundred videos.
TED-Ed is built on collaboration between teachers and animators. Teachers can contribute their voices and knowledge, and the animators make the lesson come to life in an educational video. Anyone can nominate a teacher or an animator on the TED-Ed channel, or suggest a topic for a lesson.
TED-Ed’s YouTube channel is part of the YouTube EDU project, which provides educational videos on numerous different topics. In early April 2012, a new TED-Ed website will be also launched, including the videos and more learning tools.
